Quick Guide to Costco Labels (Because Who Has Time to Google in the Aisles?)
Published 8 months ago • 4 min read
Hello Wanderers,
If there’s one thing we’ve learned since starting Wanderer, it’s this: labels matter. The tricky part? Figuring out what they actually mean when you’re standing in Costco with a full cart and no time to whip out Google.
That’s a big reason why we started Warehouse Wanderer—to give fellow members the quick, no-fuss info you need to make wise choices in the aisles—case in point: Della Light Brown Rice. We’ve tossed it in our cart before without a second thought, but recently we paused and asked—what’s with the “light” part? Is it just a color thing?
Turns out, yes and no. The lighter shade originates from its color, but that color is a result of processing. Traditional brown rice keeps all three parts—the bran, germ, and endosperm—while white rice is stripped down to just the endosperm. Light brown rice lands somewhere in between: partially milled, with some bran and germ intact. The bonus? It cooks in about 20 minutes instead of the usual 50, though you trade off a bit of fiber and nutrients. If you’ve been curious about whole grains but aren’t a fan of long cook times or the strong nutty flavor, this is a happy medium (and an even happier buy when it’s on sale!).
While we’re at it, here are a couple of other label quick-hits you’ll spot in the warehouse:
Hamburgers — Angus: That’s the breed of cow, prized for tender, juicy, flavorful beef. Want more tips on decoding Costco’s meat section? Check out our Frozen Burger Buying Guide—it’ll save you time and help you spot the best cuts.
Olive Oil — Classic: Regular olive oil, with a milder flavor and fewer health benefits than extra-virgin. If you’re as obsessed with Costco’s giant oil section as we are, you’ll love our Olive Oil Guide that breaks down which bottle is best for cooking, drizzling, or dipping bread.
